Canine agility is a sport in which a handler is given a predetermined amount of time to direct a dog off-lead through an obstacle course.
Reportedly originally fashioned after equestrian jumping competitions, the sport of Agility with dogs utilizes different and additional obstacles. The obstacles
utilized in Canine Agility include the A-Frame, a Dog Walk (elevated narrow walkway), a Pipe Tunnel, a Collapsed Tunnel, a Tire or Hoop Jump, a See Saw,
a Pause Table, various types of jumps, and the exciting Weave Poles. In addition to the differences in the obstacles, Canine Agility utilizes a different scoring system
and different performance standards.
Agility made its debut as a side attraction. It was intended to be entertainment for the spectators at the Crufts Dog Show in England in 1979.
It has since become one of the most rapidly growing dog sport in England, Europe, Australia, and North America. Spectators seem to become mesmerized
while watching the dog and handler's contagious enthusiasm in their exciting race against the clock.
Even a casual observer of the sport can easily see that a very special bond forms between handler and competitor. Watching a "clean run" in agility is
truly like poetry in motion.
