Canine herding dogs have long been a key element within livestock industries throughout the world.
Today there is also a new interest in herding by individuals who are not involved directly with the livestock industry.
These folks are interested in providing an energy outlet and focus for their dogs by working with them. They are also helping
to preserve the innate talents and abilities of the various herding breeds which are utilized for this work.
Herding trials have been slowly increasing in both number and variety.
There are few activities available today which offer the variety of differing situations and the opportunity for true teamwork
between the handler and the dog which are such an integral part of herding. Herding dogs must fully cooperate with the handler,
yet use their own initiative and judgment in order to efficiently "get the job done". These dogs must be able to work with gentleness,
yet show definite strength when facing up to a stubborn animal.
